Freedoms Are Not A Light Switch
We live in hypocrisy if we think freedoms are only important when they affect oneself.
How do governments build public support for policies, rules, laws, and regulations that clearly take away the natural given rights of individuals to control their own bodies?
Well, it is simple. It’s worked time and time again. You convince the crowd that governments must regulate and control the human body in cases where it is in the public good - not doing so would cause harm and death. Add some shame in there, a lot of shame. And bingo, governments will get everyone on their side, who wants to kill others, harm others?

Look at any issue dealing with bodily autonomy, the freedom, and right of a person to decide what happens to their body. It always comes down to the argument that governments must intervene, use force and punishment, and shame to protect others who’d be harmed if they did not. This was essentially the argument in the eugenics debate, when the US government sterilized and ripped out the reproduction organs of 1,000s of “invalids”, those with low IQs that it did not want to bear children.

These arguments about death, and great harm to the public are ALWAYS lies. Lies to convince the public that governments must trample the fundamental freedom of individuals to consent to medical practices and to control what they want to do to and with their bodies. The lies are always of a moral foundation, despite being cloaked in science, logic, empiricism, data and calls for common sense.
Another issue, euthanasia. The argument is that the “right-to-die” is by default, a “right-to-kill”. You do not have the right and freedom to remove yourself from this world because you are killing others, providing an example for others that would lead them to kill themselves in droves. Again, it always boils down to - you are killing someone else through your wholesale guaranteed right to control your own body. Again, lies. Moralistic bullshit.
In Canada, I think of the Duplessis scandal - 1,000s upon 1,000s of children, taken and controlled by the state for “mental illness”. I think of my grandfather, confined for decades in an insane asylum by crooked doctors controlling his body and mind. Read the “Out of the Shadows At Last” report by the Federal senate commission. Soul wrenching. — It all boils down to the state controlling in some aspect, the bodies and minds of its citizens. Often for-profit, $$$, mixed in with moral high-browness.

Government vaccine mandates we see in this world today rally public support in the same way. Your refusal to get vaccinated will kill people. You are a killer through the exercise of your right to bodily autonomy.
Today, Wade vs Roe was repealed. And it is the same argument that is slowly winning the day in society. You are a killer through the exercise of your right to bodily autonomy.
The pressure to deny women the right to abortion only gathered steam the last few decades, once the argument was focused on “you are killing the unborn.” And again, this is a lie based on moral pretense. 85% of fertilized eggs die in women, unnoticed. So all women are killers and so if all women are killers … You see how absurd the science and argument is. But most believe it, as they have on many other issues. Who wants to be a “killer”?
People are rightly screaming mad, upset. It’s an insult, a slap in the face. A woman has the right to their own judgment, to make their own decisions about their own health and reproductive freedom. It's about individual freedom, a fundamental right to make our own health decisions.
But the right to consent, to medical control of what happens to your body is NOT a push-button issue. It’s an issue of the fundamental rights and freedoms of individuals in our society. If we want a healthy society, we must push back, scream, yell, fight for all rights to bodily autonomy, fight for all rights of the individual as laid out in many charters, signed and sealed by governments and enshrined in universal law.
You can’t just scream and holler when an issue affects you and when the same travesty of justice doesn’t, you offer no support and go, meh … It’s how our individual rights are eroded, by division, issue by issue.
We need a wholesale societal reaffirmation, redeclaration confirming the sanctity of individual rights and freedoms. And we need these rights and freedoms to be enforced, guaranteed and to become sacrosanct.
The rights and freedoms of one person are your rights and freedom. They aren’t something with an on / off switch - to be supported only when they affect you, trampled on if you think they go against your “grain”.
Think of what the government did to Alan Turing. Who screamed for his bodily autonomy and freedom to decide for himself what his body was and what would be done to it?
