Human Instinct
Man, the conqueror worm. Why are we humans so prone to destruct, dominate, denude our planet?
E.O. Wilson died recently. A mind with few equals. Along with Stephen Gould, he really opened the door for me into science, science as a human, so human activity and way of seeing life in all its grandeur and frailty.
I've always been convinced that we are truly f**ked as a species because of greed. That too much is our true religion, spirit and impulse. We have so much that we don't need. We can't see clearly the difference between want and need.
All that I want is all that I need. All the rest is only greed. - Our anthem.
Just returned from the splendor of Selva Negra, the cloud forest, the wild growth, the smell of life and green. I go there to just breath the fresh air, to renew and to feel a bond with some green force that drives the fuse. It’s beautiful. I had a great time and took these young Germans visiting Nicaragua along.
However, being in nature’s splendor reminds me of how it is becoming an exception. How all over the world, we continue to dominate, destroy, deaden the environments we live in. Whether it be my family’s farm, how all have sold their trees to corporate interests for a few weeks holiday south, whether it be whatever city you name and its outskirts, plowed in and covered with little boxes made of ticky-tacky, whether it be our great mountains whose timeless tops are leveled for 10 years of ore, whether it be roads, highways reaching everywhere for more opportunities to dominate, destroy, deaden …
Man, Poe’s conquering worm.
I wrote a few poetic thoughts once I got home.
Too Much.
Too much on the plate.
Too much in the belly.
Too much hate.
Too much on the telly.
Too much clothing in the closet.
Too much trying to do.
Too much credit in the wallet.
Too much religion too.
Too much bluster and b.s.
Too much, not enough 'nd stuff.
Too much commentary and p.s.
Too much not real, just fluff.
Too much of everything
Even too much of, too little.
Greed, it's all around and getting worse.
Everything I get
I take from someone else.
Word.
Thanks for your poem, David.
I love nature and believe it can teach us many things. I sometimes feel left out when i can't be a little greedy like others or when i see i'm the only one who does somethinng. What do you suggest i do?
