Loss of a loved one - a friend, your pet, your family IS hard.
There is a reason people feel like they lost a limb. That other living being has become a part of you, part of your identity, who you are.
So it is hard. Time helps but it isn’t the only answer despite what many pundits say. We need to rebuild our identity, our relationship with ourselves. We need to grow back that limb. It can be done, you first need to go across that line.
I experienced this recently. A friend was sincere enough to say I’d “stuffed it” and after much reflection - it was true. I started to deal with it. Face it. Rebuild my self.
So deal with it. In your own way. Be brave and the world will repay that loss in spades. It will.

Grouchy Jim
upstairs apartment
37 years
always made his wife breakfast.
37 YEARS!
Then a kiss on her cheek
and off to the pit at D & W Oil & Lube.
Now that June is gone
he wakes up late
spits and coughs
then staggers straight to McDonald’s.
Sometimes he sees Anne there
and buys her a hash brown.
He's learning how to live again.
