The Donut Guy
We get something even when we give, even if it is only donuts. It's not always good.
The Ego Is A Powerful Thing
I once knew this guy,
forget his name because
I always just referred to him as
K - short for Krispy Kreme.
The first time I met him,
after a brief chat
he handed me a card.
I thought it was his
business card and particulars
but it was a card
for a dozen free donuts.
They didn’t have that kind
of donut shop where I lived
in Guatemala but I put it
aside for a rainy day in America.
I’d meet him often
in our small town and
each time we’d meet
he’d send me off with
a salutation, a card
for a dozen donuts.
I never did get stateside
to use those cards.
They continued to pile up
until one day my wife
threw them out.
I was a little sad that day.
They reminded me of K
and how he seemed to get
a jolt of energy giving me
one of those cards
that he knew I couldn’t
cash in.
The ego is a powerful thing.
