The Ones That Got Away
Poets are much like fishermen. They never know what they'll catch or not catch!
"Writing poetry is like fishing. Some you keep, some you throw back and some just get away."
I’ve finished my latest collection of poems. I hope readers will enjoy them. Available for purchase as a paperback on Amazon. Paid subscribers to Naked & Alive can download a pdf copy below.
The book contains poems that “got away”. I’ve been scouring some of the 20 or 30 notebooks I have down here in Nicaragua with me and in that process, have selected a hundred or so to share in the collection. Ones that just didn’t get into my other books.
I thank each and every reader for their support. I’ve been writing, thinking, speaking, and singing poetry for over 40 years. It’s just always been a part of me - like my left leg or my fingernails. I’ll continue to share more poems along with my semi-daily writing and journaling.
Here is a poem related to fishing. Comes up often enough in my writing. Enjoy!
So Many Fish In The Sea
I tried to take pleasure
my hands about her tiny waist
but from time to time
I had to look at her face.
A face not even
liquor, love or money could erase.
As my fish-friendly father
once confessed,
half sauced
still on the rocking boat,
“The deeper you put in your line
the uglier you’ll bring up
but the eating’s all the same.”
