Day 17. Goodbye Oklahoma.

A day of cold north winds and frisky cows with irresistble eyes.

The day started with a few hours cool (42) ride into Tulsa. It was Sunday, pretty empty and I enjoyed taking in the cityscape. I stopped at Tally’s, a famous location as you exit Tulsa, for a BIG breakfast. Much needed calories for the day ahead.

Most of the ride, over 10 hours on the bike was into a cold head/side wind. North wind. And looking left or right, I was always in sight of cows. The cold weather was biting but I put my head down and kept at it.

My music today was Cat Stevens. Something positive, impactful. Muhammad Yusef asks, “ O Why? Why must you waste your life away? You’ve got to live for today, then let it go.” Listen to this whole, life affirming song - Can’t keep it in. It was my motto today.

I passed by so many classic, historical things. This old tanker is just one example.

I soon crossed the Arkansas river as I worked hard but without going very fast.

I soon passed through the busy city of Claremore. Really a busy place!

All along Route 66, you’ll pass through villages with many classic cars. Here is an example. Cars rule and do they make them loud! It’s crazy how loud cars are here, the louder the better.

I continued through more towns, Stopping for coffees along the way. So many places just hanging in there … I didn’t meet many people, it was a day to keep pushing on the bike, not easy at all. Bad road surfaces, cold, wind …

On Route 66, you’ll see many murals. Here is an example.

Finally, I got to Miami, on the border with Missouri. Tomorrow, I’ll discover Joplin and Springfield Missouri. Wind and cold scheduled but Tuesday the wind will go my way, warm and from the south. As they say in Oklahoma, turn your head and the weather changes!

Here are the horses where I recorded the audio above, just before entering Miami. And behind, the sun setting in the same spot.
