Day 27. Motor City.

I made it to Detroit. Tomorrow it's Canada.

I made it to the edge of Detroit. Actually in Brooklyn, Michigan. My hotel is right near the Michigan International Speedway, a fitting end to my journey in America. The car has been such a central part of my journey on route 66 and then across to Detroit.

Motonormativity. It's a central concept to understand when it comes to America. Some call it car brain. This video handles the concept quite well.

I will comment on this fascination with the automobile further once I get home and have a keyboard. For now just the facts and the basics of my day. I've not very good at using my thumbs on my phone.

It was below zero when I started at 8:00 a.m. Snow was on the ground but I was hungry to make it to Detroit. I bundled up.

The first 10 miles I took side roads and experienced beautiful farms and wonderful cows and horses staring at me an oddity passing them by. Then I jumped on the historic highway number 12. I went through many other towns one every 10 mi or so. Coldwater was beautiful and I just had to stop at a very busy breakfast place. What a breakfast!

They even apologized for the price of eggs. All the locals were there busy with their day. I experienced a little of the incognito effect. Nobody knew that I had just come thousands of miles across the country on a bicycle especially now when it was snowing.

I carried on. At least the day was dry and I planned on a shorter day anyway.

Yesterday I spent a few hours shivering and shaking in bed, no heat in my hotel room. A horror show of a hotel. But now I'm in luxury and I've had a hot bath and the world looks good. Canada is close. I will research up how to get a bike across the Peace bridge and customs so I'm ready for tomorrow, a short day. I will soon be hitting 5,000 km or 3,000 mi. I just can't believe I've made it. Wow.

So many roadkill deer in this state. And so many stores selling stuff on how to kill these deer. In my next life, I don't want to be Bambi.

Less of these signs in Michigan but you still see them. This one at the entrance of Brooklyn where I'm staying. I believe that even without him, everything is possible. Magical thinking has no limits.

I'm still dreaming about my family and giving them all a hug and telling them I love them so much. Absence makes the heart grow fonder. My plan for the moment is to follow the lake Erie coastline and see some of the unique farming towns down in that area. Like any day let's see what's going to happen. It's a journey. The road is long but the spirit is willing.
